Farm equipment theft ring busted -

December 31, 1969

23, Reed Harms has been charged with stealing, tampering, burglary, property damage and animal abuse. 5, Chad Armstrong was charged with tampering, property damage, conspiracy to commit stealing, conspiracy to commit property damage and receiving stolen property. This investigation coincided with the Moniteau County Sheriff's Office investigating a theft from a John Deere dealership a few miles away. 20, another tractor was reported stolen from Mulberry Lane in the Stover area. While recovering the tractors, a state trooper noticed a vehicle in the area which was registered to Reed Harms of Stover, according to the probable cause statement filed against Harms by the Morgan County Sheriff's Office. 17, Morgan County detectives received information that Harms and another individual were attempting to sell a stolen tractor to Armstrong. According to the probable cause statement, Harms said in an interview with police that he was not involved in the theft from Mulberry Lane, though he admitted his vehicle was used in the theft from the John Deere dealership, and said he had heard... Harms said he and Sutton had also taken a stolen tractor to Armstrong's property, but that Armstrong didn't want it. They reportedly proceeded to dump the vehicle in Pettis County, near the other tractor. Harms then admitted to stealing the tractor from Moon Valley Road, but said he didn't know what to do with it, so he dumped it in Pettis County. - Armstrong admitted to purchasing a brush hog that was on one of the stolen tractors and allowing the vehicle to be hidden on his property.

Ag tech could boost Tri-City economy - Tri-City Herald

December 31, 1969

The Tri-Cities scored a coup of sorts when organizers of an influential ag tech conference decided it would be better to hold it in the Mid-Columbia than in its Oregon hometown. The Precision Farming Expo is a two-day gathering of some of the top names in agriculture technology. Jeff Lorton organized the first tech-oriented ag show in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in 2013. The Tri-Cities, he said, is simply a better fit, both because its agricultural sector is bigger than Oregon’s but also because its business and education... The Columbia Basin sits at the heart of a three-state, $22 billion agriculture industry with Washington representing nearly half the total. Oregon and Idaho have $8 billion and $5 billion industries respectively. More importantly, WSU, with its robust agriculture-related academic and research programs, recognizes the importance of farm-focused technology, he said. Washington, she said, has perfect conditions to foster ag tech — a strong community of farmers and thriving aerospace and information technology sectors. Both offer intriguing technology that lets farmers better monitor growing conditions and in turn, reduce the use of energy, water and fertilizers. The state also leads in cloud computing, data management and data storage.
